MLB notes: Bradley breaks bone near eye

Surgery might be necessary for Cleveland CF

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Indians center fielder Milton Bradley broke a bone near his left eye while trying to make a catch and might need surgery.

Bradley was injured during Wednesday's game against the Anaheim Angels when a ball ricocheted off the outfield wall and hit him just below his left eye.

Indians assistant general manager Neal Huntington said Bradley fractured his orbital bone and will be re-examined Saturday by Dr. James Conforto.

Huntington said Bradley will be out indefinitely and could need surgery. “Any time you're talking about a player's eye, sure there is some concern,” he said.

Bradley was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

DIAMONDBACKS: Randy Johnson, who missed his scheduled start Wednesday because of a strained lower back, will next pitch Monday against Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly considered starting Johnson against Montreal on Saturday but decided to keep him in his usual every-five-days slot.

Johnson will receive treatment today, then throw his regular side session Saturday.

PIRATES: Pat Meares said he will not have surgery on his injured left hand, which has hampered his performance at the plate since 1999. The infielder has disagreed with management about whether he should play without the surgery.

A hand specialist consulted by the Pirates recommended surgery, but a University of Massachusetts doctor visited by Meares said another operation would not help him regain any strength or flexibility in his hand.

MARLINS: Manager Jeff Torborg will serve a one-game suspension today at Milwaukee for an April 8 ejection, but the penalty was reduced from two games. He was ejected at Florida's home opener against Montreal after umpires reversed a call that negated a three-run homer by Mike Lowell.

        • Right-hander Brad Penny was removed from Thursday's game against St.Louis after two innings due to soreness just above his elbow and probably will miss at least one start.

CARDINALS: Reliever Steve Kline, who has been hindered by a triceps injury, went on the disabled list. He last pitched Sunday.

Kline said team doctors told him he'll be sidelined three to four weeks. Results of an MRI exam showed no serious injury, but he won't throw for 10 days.

TIGERS: The team placed closer Matt Anderson on the 15-day disabled list while he recovers from a shoulder injury.

GEHRIG REMEMBERED: Lou Gehrig's famous farewell speech will be repeated by celebrities in 15 major-league parks before games June 1. Luke Perry of Beverly Hills 90210 fame will recite the speech in Cincinnati.

LABOR TALKS: The arbitrator hearing the grievance by baseball players against contraction will try to rule on the case by July 15. Shyam Das will hear final arguments June 6.
