Dodgers blanked for fifth time

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers were shut out for the fifth time, the most in the majors, in their 4-0 loss to the Reds Wednesday night. They were shut out eight times all of last season.

“We're struggling right now, there's not much else to say,” cleanup hitter Shawn Green said. “In the last couple of days we haven't scored, and the middle of the lineup hasn't done anything.”

Green, whose 49 homers last season were more than any Dodger had hit since the team moved to Los Angeles in 1958, had a chance to tie it with the bases loaded in the eighth. But he grounded meekly to first on Gabe White's 3-1 slider.

“If I throw him a fastball and he pops it up, I look great. But he hits a home run, I look like an idiot,” White said. “So I went with the slider and just made up my mind that if I walk him, we're still winning by three. I've faced him so many times, I think I've thrown him every pattern there is to throw.”

Hideo Nomo (2-4) should sue the Dodgers for non-support. The Dodgers have been shut out in three of Nomo's six starts.

Nomo allowed only two Reds to reach base in the first five innings, but they were on home runs by Barry Larkin and Juan Encarnacion. He retired nine straight after Larkin's home run and six in a row after Encarnacion's. But the Reds added two runs in the sixth with the help of Nomo's throwing error.

Nomo allowed only four hits in eight innings and struck out 10. It was the 29th time the right-hander has fanned 10 or more.

“He had a devastating split tonight,” Larkin said. “He made us look silly up there at times. It was a battle.”
