Reds-Dodgers series preview
Enquirer staff and news services
The first-place Reds visit Los Angeles and San Francisco on a six-game road trip beginning Tuesday night.
When: Today, Wednesday and Thursday, 10:10 p.m.
Where: Dodger Stadium.
Radio: WLW (700 AM).
TV: Thursday, Fox Sports Net.
The probables: Today Chris Reitsma (0-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Kevin Brown (1-1, 5.11); Wednesday Joey Hamilton (1-1, 3.30) vs. Hideo Nomo (2-3, 2.35); Thursday Elmer Dessens (1-3, 1.80) vs. Omar Daal (3-0, 1.31).
The bats/arms: The Dodgers are only seventh in the NL in runs scored, but that has been more than enough thanks to their pitching, which is second in the NL with a 2.95 ERA. They've allowed only six unearned runs.
The rest: The Dodgers were criticized for trading Gary Sheffield to the Braves, but it's worked out. Brian Jordan (.294, 3 HR, 13 RBI) and Odalis Perez (3-1, 1.64) have been solid. The Dodgers began the week tied for the best record in the NL at 16-9.
Strong pitching has gone beyond the starters. After choosing not to retain Jeff Shaw as closer, L.A. was in a spot. But manager Jim Tracy moved starter Eric Gagne into the role and he has been lights out he's allowed only one run while converting all nine of his save opportunities.
