Yankees win two of three from Mariners

The Associated Press

Out West against their playoff rivals, the New York Yankees showed why they have won four straight pennants.

Rookie Nick Johnson broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-out RBI double, leading the Yankees over the Seattle Mariners 4-3 Sunday.

New York won two of three in Seattle to complete a 4-2 trip that began in Oakland. Those are the teams the Yankees beat in each of the past two postseasons to reach the World Series.

“These are the clubs that have played well over the last couple of years. So that's how you measure yourself,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said. “They measure themselves against us and we do the same thing against them.”

In other games, it was: Oakland 10, Chicago 0; Detroit 5, Minnesota 4; Baltimore 13, Kansas City 0; Anaheim 8, Toronto 5 in 14 innings; and Texas 2, Cleveland 1. Tampa Bay's game at Boston was postponed by rain.

A day after the Yankees lost 1-0 despite Ted Lilly's one-hitter, Orlando Hernandez and three relievers limited the Mariners to five hits. Steve Karsay (1-0) got one out for the win and Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth his eighth save.

Jason Giambi, who hit a two-run double, was 8-for-25 (.320) with three doubles and five RBIs on the trip, raising his average to .277.

“Now, I'm letting the ball get to me and hitting line drives to left and left-center,” he said. “So things are definitely starting to come around.”

Arthur Rhodes (1-1) had a 10-game regular season winning streak broken, the longest by a Mariners' reliever. It was his first defeat since Oakland beat him 8-2 on Sept. 23, 2000.

        Athletics 10, White Sox 0

Tim Hudson (3-2) allowed three hits in eight innings and Billy Koch pitched a 1-2-3 ninth as Oakland completed a three-game sweep.

Eric Chavez homered and had four RBIs, and the A's took advantage of three errors to score four unearned runs in winning their season-high fourth straight. Oakland outscored Chicago 32-5 in the series and extended its winning streak against the visiting White Sox to 10.

Chicago lost its third straight after winning nine of 11. Todd Ritchie (2-2) gave up seven runs — three earned — eight hits and five walks in five innings.

        Tigers 5, Twins 4

Bobby Higginson singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth as Detroit completed its first series sweep in 34 tries since last July.

Minnesota, 1-5 on its road trip, trailed 4-1 before Corey Koskie's two-run homer off Jose Paniagua in the eighth and Cristian Guzman's RBI grounder in the ninth.

With runners at the corners, Julio Santana (1-0) retired Torii Hunter on a groundout. Wendell Magee singled off Mike Jackson (1-1) with two outs in the bottom half and scored on Higginson's single off J.C. Romero.

        Orioles 13, Royals 0

Scott Erickson (3-2) pitched a four-hitter for his first shutout since Sept. 7, 1999, and visiting Baltimore completed its first three-game sweep since September 2000.

Marty Cordova tied a career-high with four hits while scoring three runs and driving in two. Geronimo Gil had three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double in the eighth, and Tony Batista hit a two-run double, giving him 11 RBIs in the series.

Bryan Rekar (0-2) allowed five runs and five hits in three-plus innings for Kansas City, which has lost 11 of 14.

        Angels 8, Blue Jays 5

David Eckstein hit his second grand slam in two days with two outs in the bottom of the 14th off Pedro Borbon (1-2). Anaheim rallied three times to complete a three-game sweep and extend Toronto's losing streak to five.

Garret Anderson went 4-for-6 with a triple and two doubles for the Angels. Mark Lukasiewicz (1-0) won despite giving up an RBI single to Tom Wilson in the 14th that gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead.

        Rangers 2, Indians 1

Ismael Valdes (2-3) allowed one run and five hits in six innings, and Frank Catalanotto scored one run and drove in the other as the Rangers sent visiting Cleveland to its 11th loss in 13 games following an 11-1 start.

John Rocker, who faced just one batter in each of his two previous outings since being recalled from a minor league assignment to which he never reported, got out of a jam in the seventh.

Bartolo Colon (3-3) pitched a five-hitter in a losing effort for his second complete game this season and the 13th of his career. He struck out nine and walked one.

Alex Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly for Texas, and Hideki Irabu got his fifth save.
