Baseball notes: Chipper questionable with sprained thumb
The Associated Press
ATLANTA Atlanta left fielder Chipper Jones left Sunday's 7-1 loss to Houston after seven innings because of a sprained right thumb.
Jones drove to Piedmont Hospital to undergo X-Rays. Manager Bobby Cox, whose team is off today before beginning a three-game series in Milwaukee, doesn't know when Jones will return to the lineup.
His thumb is really swollen up, Cox said. We'll see Tuesday if he can play or not. I don't know about Chipper. He's going to be questionable.
YANKEES: Left-hander Andy Pettitte cut short a throwing session off the mound and flew to Alabama to have his tender left elbow checked by a doctor.
Pettitte threw 15 pitches in the Yankees' bullpen, his first stint off a mound since being put on the disabled list. He will be examined Monday in Birmingham by Dr. James Andrews.
Third baseman Robin Ventura left Sunday's game in the second inning after colliding with Seattle shortstop Carlos Guillen while attempting to break up a double play.
ROCKIES: Tim Bogar, a veteran infielder who began the season with Colorado's Triple-A team in Colorado Springs, has retired. The 35-year-old Bogar was hitting .163 (7-for-43) in 13 games at Colorado Springs.
SHORT HOPS: Ryan Klesko drove in five runs as the Padres and Pirates split a doubleheader for the 11th straight time.
Klesko, who homered in the first game, singled in two runs in the second game to extend his hitting streak to an NL high 16 games.
The Mets played without injured Mike Piazza on Mike Piazza Bobblehead Day, but swept the three-game series and won their fourth in a row with Sunday's 9-6 victory over Milwaukee.
The Brewers broke out of their hitting slump on a rainy day, yet still finished 0-6 on their road trip.
Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero, who homered twice in a game for the second time this season, has 28 RBI, one more than the team's previous April record, which he shared with Henry Rodriguez.
A crowd of 9,780 came to Olympic Stadium despite a storm that left at least 5 inches of snow in Montreal.
Marlins pitcher Ryan Dempster has been bothered by a swollen right ring finger, so his next start will be pushed back one day to Wednesday at St. Louis. Dempster hurt his finger when hit by a batted ball April 19. A.J. Burnett will start for Dempster on four days' rest Tuesday.
When Indians DH Ellis Burks homered Saturday, it gave him home runs in 40 ballparks, the most in major league history. Fred McGriff and Mark McGwire both homered in 39 ballparks.
