Reds Chatter
In honor of two of the most prolific home-run hitters ever hanging out on the river this weekend, here are some fun longball facts:
Sloooow down
Injuries have slowed Junior's home-stroke. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, he's hit only 63 home runs to 130 for Bonds.
Grand slams, career
Junior 14, second among active players
Bonds, 10, tied for eighth among active players
Consecutive big seasons
Here are their most home runs in consecutive seasons:
Bonds, 122, 2000-01
Griffey, 112, 1997-98
Multiple home runs games
Bonds, 58
Griffey, 56
Fathers and sons
The most homers all-time by fathers and sons:
Bobby and Barry Bonds, 907
Ken and Ken Griffey, 613
Tony and Enduardo Perez, 418
Gus and Buddy Bell, 407
Yogi and Dale Berra, 407
Home-run watch
The Reds' week was not only successful in regards to wins and losses, but also with the longball. The Reds' two homers Saturday helped leave the other contenders in the dust in the home-run race:
Reds, 16
*Lance Berkman, 10
Barry Bonds, 8
Sammy Sosa., 8
*Alex Rodriguez, 8
(Saturday not included)
Ex-Red of the week
Pokey Reese and Dmitri Young.
Well, not much to report since Young, who has a hernia, joined Reese on the disabled list Friday.
My aching arm
Reds relievers Gabe White and Scott Sullivan are on pace to appear in more than 100 games. That brings to mind one of the more outrageous seasons in baseball history Los Angeles reliever Mike Marshall's 1974 season. Marshall appeared in a record 106 games all in relief going 15-12 with 21 saves over 208 1/3 innings with a 2.42 ERA.
The week ahead
Monday, off
Tuesday, at Los Angeles, 10:10 p.m.
Wednesday, at Los Angeles, 10:10 p.m.
Thursday, at Los Angeles, 10:10 p.m.
Friday, at San Francisco, 10:35 p.m.
Saturday, at San Francisco, 4:05 p.m.
Sunday, at San Francisco, 4:05 p.m.
The skinny: In the past, the West Coast has been a place the Reds have gone to die. But strangely, last season, the Reds swept their three-game seasons at Los Angeles and at San Francisco.
