No date set on Griffey's return

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ken Griffey Jr. isn't quite ready for the Tour de France, or for playing center field.

Griffey, out since April 8 with a torn patella tendon in his right knee, continues to rehabilitate. A big part of that is riding a stationary bike.

“I rode the Tour de France,” Griffey said. “Lance (Armstrong) doesn't have anything to worry about.”

Griffey referred all inquiries about when he might return to the Reds' medical staff. Medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek sticks to his original projection: Griffey will return three to six weeks from the time of his injury.

“He's doing very good,” Kremchek said. “I said the other day it would be closer to three than six. I'll stick with that.”

Three weeks from the injury would have Griffey returning Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. But before he returns, Griffey must pass a series of tests.

“We're not putting an exact date on it,” Kremchek said.

Griffey has yet to run — except on the underwater treadmill at Paul Brown Stadium.

The rehab program is similar to the one Griffey did to come back from his torn hamstring last year. Griffey has been able to hit.

“It's gone good,” he said. “But nobody's throwing sliders and change-ups yet.”
