Reds Notebook:
Percentages pay for Boone

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CHICAGO - Managers have a lot of statistics at their fingertips, and manager Bob Boone put the numbers to good use Saturday.

Wilton Guerrero was 2-for-7 against Wood coming in; Todd Walker was 0-for-13.

Guerrero started at second base and went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. He also made a nice running, over-the-shoulder catch in shallow right.

“Todd hasn't been swinging the bat very well lately,” Boone said, “and Wilton has had some success against Wood.”

Boone's other lineup decision also worked. He started Reggie Taylor in center field, rather than Austin Kearns or Ruben Mateo. Taylor's infield hit drove in the Reds' last two runs.

Still more from the stat front: Taylor hit leadoff in his previous four starts, but Boone had him in the No.7 spot and led off with Barry Larkin, who was 4-for-11 against Wood.

Larkin opened the game with a single, starting the three-run first.

STRUGGLING BRADY: Pinch hitter Brady Clark is hitless in the last 13 at-bats. For a guy who can hope for only one at-bat a game, it can be difficult to get out of that kind of slump.

“It's tough,” Clark said. “The main thing I try to do is get quality at-bats. Nobody expects you to hit .350 as a pinch hitter. You don't get four, five at-bats in different situations.”

Clark is considered one of the hardest workers on the team. But he knows you can't work yourself out of a slump.

“More (batting practice) is not necessarily good,” he said. “I try to take quality batting practice. I know the hits will come.”

Clark was one of the Reds' best pinch hitters last year, when he hit .271 with a homer and eight RBI in 48 at-bats.
