Reds won't see Alou this weekend
The Associated Press
CHICAGO Moises Alou, who's played in just three games for the Chicago Cubs this year, will miss the rest of the weekend with a stiff back.
Alou hurt his back Wednesday night when he dove for a ball against the Montreal Expos. He hit the artificial turf hard, and Cubs manager Don Baylor said Alou's back stiffened after the game.
He wasn't able to swing the bat without pain Friday, so Baylor took him out of the lineup. He was replaced by Roosevelt Brown, who hit a two-run homer and went 1-for-2.
Today (Alou) came in and it took him forever to put on his clothes, Baylor said after the Cubs beat the Reds 5-2. I knew he was going to be a scratch.
Alou is taking pain relievers, and Baylor said he'll give him the next two days off and see how he feels Monday.
We're just going to hold him back for a couple of days, Baylor said.
Alou, the Cubs' top offseason acquisition, was expected to bolster the lineup and give Sammy Sosa and Fred McGriff added protection. But he started the year on the disabled list with a strained right calf and didn't play his first game until Monday.
He was 1-for-10, getting his first hit Wednesday night.
