Tigers remain winless; Mariners undefeated away from home

By JOSH DUBOW
AP Sports Writer

The Seattle Mariners can't seem to lose on the road, while the Detroit Tigers can't win a game anywhere.

Pinch-hitter David Ortiz broke an 0-for-16 slump with a tiebreaking bases-loaded triple in an eight-run eighth inning, and the Tigers lost their 11th straight game to open the season, 13-7 Sunday at Minnesota.

“It's getting tougher,” outfielder Bobby Higginson said. “You keep thinking when you're coming into the ballpark that today's going to be the day. It's getting a little old.”

Craig Paquette homered twice, had four hits and made a nice defensive play at third to help the Tigers go ahead 7-5 — their first eighth-inning lead since April 3 against Tampa Bay, when they lost 2-1 in 12 innings.

“I literally thought to myself, today is the day,” Tigers starter Steve Sparks said. “We've got the ball bouncing our way. I thought we'd cruise through there. I thought we'd cruise through there, especially when Paquette hit that home run.”

At Texas, Ruben Sierra went 5-for-5 against his former team to overcome a pair of home runs by ex-Mariner Alex Rodriguez as Seattle beat the Rangers 9-7 for its seventh straight win.

Seattle improved to 7-0 on the road after setting an AL record with 59 road wins last season.

“We've already come back seven times in our 13 games,” Boone said. “After a while, you get used to it. This team has spoiled me.”

In other AL games, it was the Yankees 6, Boston 2; Anaheim 4, Oakland 1; Tampa Bay 5, Toronto 4; and Baltimore 9, the White Sox 4. The Kansas City-Cleveland game was rained out.

A.J. Pierzynski singled off Jose Paniagua leading off in the eighth for the Twins. Matt Anderson (0-1) relieved and pinch-hitter Bobby Kielty tied it by homering on the third pitch.

“My fastball wasn't there, but we're all professionals. We've got to find something else to get them out with,” Anderson said. “It's difficult, but it's 7-7 if we get out of that inning and we've got the momentum. I just couldn't shut them down after that homer.”

Jacque Jones and Cristian Guzman followed with singles, Doug Mientkiewicz walked and Ortiz tripled to right for a 10-7 lead.

Sierra, who hit a grand slam Friday to beat the Rangers, singled to put Seattle ahead to stay after the Mariners bounced back from a 5-1 deficit.

“Any time you play against your old team, you want to do a little more,” Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. “I think Ruben has something to prove against this team, the same away that Alex drove in five runs against his old team.”

Sierra hit .291 in 94 games with 23 homers and 67 RBIs last year for the Rangers, but Texas GM John Hart bypassed Sierra, trading for Carl Everett and signing Juan Gonzalez as a free agent.

“I'm playing for Seattle now,” he said. “I have to do my best for them. I'm feeling good at the plate, trying to stay back and go with the pitch, use my hands more.”

        Yankees 6, Red Sox 2

Mike Mussina retired his first 16 batters in his first Fenway Park appearance since falling one out short of a perfect game last summer, leading New York over Boston.

Mussina (3-0) finally allowed a runner on Doug Mirabelli's hard single near the third-base line and left after giving up four hits in the seventh, including a two-run homer by Manny Ramirez.

Alfonso Soriano, Rondell White and Robin Ventura homered as the Yankees stop a four-game losing streak and move back into the AL East lead, a half-game ahead of Boston.

        Angels 4, Athletics 1

Garret Anderson homered in his second straight game, David Eckstein had three hits, and Kevin Appier won for the first time with Anaheim as the Angels snapped a six-game losing streak.

Eric Chavez hit his sixth homer for visiting Oakland, which had won nine straight against the Angels. Barry Zito (0-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings, ending a nine-game winning streak.

        Orioles 9, White Sox 4

Melvin Mora hit a three-run homer and scored three times, and Jay Gibbons added a two-run shot to lead Baltimore at Chicago.

Calvin Maduro (1-1) gave up three runs, seven hits and two walks in six innings.

Carlos Lee homered for the White Sox, who did not get another good outing from Dan Wright (1-1), who allowed five runs in two-plus innings.

Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 4, 10 innings

Ben Grieve hit an RBI single off Pasqual Coco (0-1) in the bottom of the 10th to give Tampa Bay the win at home.

Esteban Yan (1-0) retired all seven batters he faced for the win.
