MLB: Cubs, Gilkey agree to contract
Troubled OF gets minor-league deal
The Associated Press
PITTSBURGH Outfielder Bernard Gilkey, sentenced to four months in jail in January after a series of drunken driving arrests, signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs Saturday.
Gilkey, 35, will report to Chicago's extended spring training camp in Mesa, Ariz., before joining its Triple-A Iowa farm club later this month.
On Jan.18, St. Louis (Mo.) County Circuit Judge John Ross ordered Gilkey to spend four months in county jail for driving with a revoked license, and a concurrent 15-day term for misdemeanor speeding. Gilkey also was put on probation for five years and told to perform 500 hours of community service, undergo drug-and-alcohol treatment and refrain from driving for five years.
Ross initially sentenced Gilkey to five years in prison on a felony drunken driving count from April 2001, then suspended the sentence and ordered probation.
Gilkey pleaded guilty in November to the felony drunken-driving count and related charges from his April arrest. That came less than six weeks after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DWI charges stemming from two St. Louis County arrests in 2000.
Gilkey was placed on two years of probation for the 2000 arrests and ordered to get counseling.
Gilkey has been arrested for alcohol-related driving incidents at least four times, including once in Florida in 1998.
During his major-league career, Gilkey has 118 homers, 546 RBI and 115 stolen bases in 11 seasons with six major league teams. He spent part of last season with Atlanta.
The Cubs also acquired minor-league right-hander Marc Deschenes from the Pittsburgh Pirates for future considerations. Deschenes, 29, had three saves and a 3.00 ERA in three games with Double-A Altoona.
ASTROS: Pitcher Wade Miller will miss his next scheduled start after complaining of neck spasms and a dead arm.
Miller had been scheduled to pitch in Cincinnati Wednesday. He is 0-2 with an 9.00 ERA after giving up six runs and seven hits in five innings to the Cardinals.
Carlos Hernandez will pitch in Miller's place Wednesday.
Miller, who lost Friday night at St. Louis, will return to Houston on Sunday. today. Astros manager Jimy Williams said Miller will be examined by team doctor David Lintner Monday.
ROYALS: Left-hander Darrell May, sidelined since spring training because of a strained groin, was activated Saturday to face Cleveland.
May made his first major league start since Sept.8, 1997, and held the Indians to just two hits homers by Burks and Thome in 4 1/3 innings. He pitched in Japan the past four seasons before being signed by the Royals in December.
