Bonds socks way to 6th on homer list

Passes Killebrew with 574 in career

Enquirer news services

SAN FRANCISCO — Giants outfielder Barry Bonds hit his 574th major-league home run Saturday, moving into sixth place on baseball's career list.

Bonds, who hit a solo home run off Milwaukee's Nelson Figueroa in the bottom of the first inning at Pacific Bell Park, passed Harmon Killebrew, with whom he had been tied since hitting a three-run homer Friday night.

The Giants defeated the Brewers 3-2.

The next slugger ahead of Bonds all-time is Mark McGwire, who is fifth with 583 home runs. Bonds broke McGwire's single-season record of 70 homers last season by hitting 73.

“Everybody's waiting, every time he's up,” said teammate Livan Hernandez, Saturday's winning pitcher. “Is he going to hit a home run?”

Bonds, who leads the major leagues with seven home runs this season, also walked, lined out to left and was hit by a pitch Saturday.

He was not immediately available for comment.

Ramon Martinez added a two-run homer for San Francisco, which improved to 9-2, best in the National League.

Livan Hernandez (3-0) allowed two runs over seven innings to pick up the win for the Giants. Figueroa (0-1) gave up all three runs over six innings as the Brewers lost their seventh straight.

Richie Sexson and Raul Casanova scored the runs for Milwaukee.
