Reds-Pirates preview
Where: PNC Park, Pittsburgh
When: Today, 1:35p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 7:05p.m.
Radio: WLW-AM (700).
TV: Fox Sports Net Wednesday.
The arms:
Today RHP Elmer Dessens (0-1, 9.82) vs. LHP Ron Villone (0-1, 7.20)
Wednesday RHP Jose Acevedo (1-0, 1.50) vs. RHP Kip Wells (0-1, 3.60)
RHP Jimmy Haynes (0-1, 15.43) vs. LHP Jimmy Anderson (1-0, 2.70).
The bats: The Pirates didn't bang their way to the good start. They hit only one home run in the first five games. Pokey Reese is hitting .500 and has a team-leading four RBI. Brian Giles, who has batted .315, .315 and .309 since coming over from Cleveland three seasons ago, hasn't played in any of the five games. Giles pulled a muscle in his right side while taking batting practice last week. His status is uncertain.
The rest: Today is the home opener for the Pirates. It is the second straight year the Reds opened the Pittsburgh home season. The Pirates, who were never over .500 at anytime in 2001, are off to a 4-1 start, their best since 1996. A win today would equal their best start since 1983.
