Rijo just wants to have fun
The Cincinnati Enquirer
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Jose Rijo threw two innings in a Single-A game Sunday. It was a chance for Rijo to work on some things and, as always, have some fun.
Rijo got up 0-2 on 23-year-old catcher Bryan Prince. Rijo gave Prince the flip of his glove the international signal for a fastball coming.
Prince hit it off the scoreboard in center. I loved it, Rijo said. I feel better than the guy who hit the fastball.
Rijo also made one appointment. David Gil, the third-round pick in 2000, approached Rijo between innings.
He said, "Josie, teach me how to throw a slider,' Rijo said. I'm going to teach him tomorrow.
Minor league pitching coordinator Sammy Ellis might put the kibosh on that.
No, I'm not letting Jose Rijo teach Gil or anybody else the slider, Ellis said. He got all those zippers on his elbow from throwing the slider improperly. He just had the arm strength to get away with it.
