Reds whittle roster

The Cincinnati Enquirer

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Five Reds were reassigned to minor league camp Sunday: outfielders Anthony Sanders and Raul Gonzalez, infielders Ranier Olmedo and Kevin Witt, and catcher Jesse Levis. All five made the trip to Winter Haven Sunday. They were told after the game.

“In most cases, it came down to I don't have any time to give guys at-bats,” manager Bob Boone said.

When asked would he decide on 11 or 12 pitchers before the Reds' exhibition game March29 in Chattanooga, Tenn., Boone said it would be “nice but not necessary.”

MISTAKEN IDENTITY: Brady Clark apparently was misidentified by fans at Chain of Lakes Park as another Reds outfielder.

“I'm not Adam Dunn, everybody,” Clark yelled to the crowd during batting practice. Clark is 6-2; Dunn is 6-6.

Clark isn't the only person who has been misidentified by fans this spring. Boone said he's been called Ray Knight three or four times. Knight is the Reds' bench coach. But his silver hair is longer.

“Long and gray, I don't know what the deal is,” Knight said, referring to the mistaken identity.

WOHLERS WORKS: Former Reds pitcher Mark Wohlers allowed one hit in one inning against his old team. Wohlers went 3-1 with the Reds last season before the Reds traded him to the New York Yankees. He signed as a free agent with the Indians in January.

RIEDLING WEDNESDAY: Look for John Riedling to throw in a game Wednesday.

Riedling threw to live hitters Sunday for the second time since having shoulder surgery in August. He wasn't great. Two minors leaguers, Chris Williamson and Ryan Lundquist, hit several balls hard off him.

“He looked better the other day,” bullpen coach Tom Hume said. “He was probably a little stiff today. That's kind of a no-win thing (facing minor leaguers).”

Riedling is pitching through a lat muscle strain.

“Those guys were hacking,” Riedling said. “I'd do the same thing if I were a minor leaguer facing a major league pitcher. I'm not trying to break off any nasty stuff right now. I'm just worried about getting healthy.”

Riedling, a 25-year-old right-hander, will probably begin the year on the disabled list since he could only get in two sessions before the season starts.

JUNIOR OUT: Ken Griffey Jr.left the Ed Smith Stadium complex Sunday to return to Orlando. Griffey wasn't scheduled to play Sunday in Winter Haven against the Cleveland Indians. But the players who didn't play worked out in Sarasota.

“He showed up, then he got a call,” hitting coach Jim Lefebvre said. “His wife is sick. So he was excused.”
