Pirates 8, Reds 4

        The arms: Opening Day starter Joey Hamilton allowed five hits and five runs in four innings. Four runs came in the fourth. Hector Mercado gave up three runs on four hits in the fifth.

        Luis Pineda went two innings and allowed no hits. Scott Sullivan threw a hitless inning. Jim Brower gave up two hits in the ninth.

        The bats: The Reds had 10 hits. Juan Encarnacion went 3-for-5 witha home run and a double. Scott Walker went 2-for-4. Walker's double in the eighth scored two runs.

        The rest: Encarnacion robbed Adrian Brown of a hit in the ninth with a diving catch.

        Up next: The Reds play the Philadelphia Phillies today at Ed Smith Stadium.
