Davis needs strength, not surgery

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SARASOTA, Fla. — Lance Davis doesn't need surgery, but he is still out of the Reds' pitching plans for four to six weeks.

The MRI of Davis' left shoulder Wednesday showed no significant changes from the one he had in December.

“Surgery is not an option at this point,” Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek said.

But the MRI did reveal posterior shoulder inflammation. That explains why Davis has been so ineffective this spring. He gave up home runs to four of the first five batters he faced in Tuesday's spring game.

Davis will be on a strength and long-tossing program that will last for four to six weeks.

The program is similar to the one the Reds put Denny Neagle on in 1999. Neagle was able to return and pitch effectively.

Davis, a 25-year-old left-hander, was in Cincinnati for the MRI. He'll return to Sarasota today and begin the program.
