Shoulder trouble benches Davis
Lefty expected to make return on Tuesday

FORT MYERS, Fla. Lance Davis is the latest Reds pitcher to have arm or shoulder trouble this spring. Davis, a 25-year-old left-hander, was scheduled to start Friday but didn't because of shoulder tightness.
He's been doing a lot of stretching, Reds pitching coach Don Gullett said. He's going to throw off the mound Sunday. We don't anticipate any further problems. He should make his start on Tuesday.
Davis had trouble getting loose in his last start. He went one inning in the Reds' 16-6 loss to Kansas City Monday. He allowed three runs on two hits and walked three in the inning.
The tightness may have had something to do with the result.
Hopefully that explains it, Reds manager Bob Boone said.
Davis was the most successful of the three rookies in the rotation last year. He went 8-4 with a 4.74 ERA. His fastball doesn't even reach 90, so his control must be excellent for him to be successful. He averaged only 1.7 walks per start.
He's not overpowering, Gullett said. So he has to use his command. He has to be able to put the ball on the corners.
Medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek is in Sarasota and examined Davis. The injury isn't considered serious.
It's just stiffness, said assistant trainer Mark Mann. He was able to throw (Thursday), not off the mound, but long toss. He was OK.
With nine pitchers competing for spots in the rotation, no pitcher can afford to miss much time and hope to open the year in the rotation.
The Reds have three pitchers on the shelf. Jose Silva (elbow) and Chris Booker (shoulder) have had surgery. Brian Bohanon (elbow) is scheduled to have surgery Monday.
