Reitsma shows Red Sox

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FORT MYERS, Fla. —Chris Reitsma pitched three scoreless innings in Friday's victory.

The results were particularly pleasing to Reitsma. The Red Sox traded him to the Reds.

“I get all fired up to throw against them,” he said. “Anytime you get traded, you feel like they let you go for somebody they thought was better.”

ELMER DUDD: Elmer Dessens didn't have a very good outing Friday. He allowed five runs on eight hits for three innings.

“I don't know if it was a little bit of dead arm or what,” Boone said. “But he didn't have the life on his fastball. He was better after the first.”

The first five batters got hits off Dessens.

DUNN AT FIRST: Adam Dunn got his first action at first base. Sean Casey was used as the designated hitter.

Dunn has been taking balls at first base all spring.

AGELESS WONDER: Rickey Henderson led off and had a pair of doubles for the Red Sox.

Henderson, the all-time leader in runs and stolen bases, is 43 with no plans to retire.

“I'm still enjoying my self,” said Henderson, who is in camp as a non-roster invitee. “Why should I give that up?”

MITCH, THE SKIPPER: Ray Knight, who was a coach and manager when Kevin Mitchell was with the Reds, wasn't surprised to hear that Mitchell is now managing.

“He knows the game,” Knight said. “He understands the game.”

Mitchell is managing Sonoma City in California's Independent League.

TODAY'S NEWS: Ohio Gov. Bob Taft will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day. ... Tracy Byrd will sing the National Anthem. ... Ken Griffey Sr. is the grand marshal of Opening Day's 83rd Findlay Market Parade.
