Leadoff batter Brady Clark turned on a Sterling Hitchcock pitch for a home run in the first inning. (Michael E. Keating photo) | ZOOM | |
The arms: Lance Davis, the starter, didn't fare very well. He went 1 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Davis, a left-hander, was uncharacteristically wild. He walked two. ... New York's scheduled starter, Mike Mussina was scratched due to illness. His replacement, Sterling Hitchcock, struck out four in two innings. ... Five of the eight pitchers the Reds used allowed at least a run.
The bats: Former Reds farm hand Drew Henson singled in the first two runs off Davis. ... Brady Clark led off the game for the Reds with a home run. ... Austin Kearns had an RBI double in the ninth.
The rest: The Reds drew 7,197, a near sellout, for the spring opener at Ed Smith Stadium. A large number of them, however, were Yankees fans.
Up next: The Reds are at home again today. They take on the Texas Rangers. Right-hander Joey Hamilton will face fellow right-hander Ismael Valdes. Ricardo Aramboles and Ty Howington are scheduled to follow Hamilton.
