Visa problems delaying Rijo
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Reds were still three pitchersshort of a full camp Monday. Jose Rijo, Luis Pineda and Ricardo Aramboles missed Monday's workout.
The visa issues that are common with Latin American players are the problem.
No one from the Reds is sure when any of the three will arrive.
I haven't heard anything, Reds manager Bob Boone said.
We've heard they're being a lot more strict after (Sept.11), director of player personnel Leland Maddox said. I haven't conversed with anyone. I'll probably make a call (today).
Aramboles, 20, a right-hander, obtained in the Mark Wohlers deal with the New York Yankees, and Pineda, 23, another right-hander obtained in the Dmitri Young deal with Detroit, have a shot at making the team with a strong spring training. That will evaporate if they fall too far behind.
Rijo, 36, made it back to the majors last year after battling injuries for 5 1/2 years. For him to make the club as a reliever, he must build arm strength to be able to pitch on back-to-back days.
EYE ON BALL:
Hitting coach Jim Lefebvre was hit Monday. A ball hit by Gookie Dawkins in the batting cage hit Lefebvre in the eye. It's one of those things, he said. It came off the wheel (of the pitching machine) and got me. But I'm all right.
ROLLING IN:
Barry Larkin, Aaron Boone and Robin Jennings were among the position players to report to camp Monday. Todd Walker, Brady Clark, Dawkins, Ben Broussard and Austin Kearns arrived last week.
Position players have to report by Thursday. The first full-squad workout is Friday.
MONDAY'S WORKOUT:
Sixteen pitchers threw Monday, including eight who threw for the second straight day. The Reds have a total of 34 pitchers in camp. Boone said he hasn't discovered any stars among the unknowns. "I've seen some guys I like, he said, but nothing spectacular. It's hard to tell this early. You don't know how long they've been throwing.
