Riedling's shoulder improving
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. Two weeks ago, John Riedling wasn't sure if he'd be ready to go by Opening Day.
Now, he's confident.
It's improved so much the last two weeks, Riedling said of his shoulder. I've had no soreness at all. For a while, I'd throw it and it would be "oh, man.' But it gradually got better and better.
Riedling, the 26-year-old right-hander, had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum Sept.4. He just completed his rehab-throwing program. When camp opens today, it will be the first time he's throwing off the mound.
I'm a little behind where I'd normally be, Riedling said. I usually throw off the mound four or five times before spring training.
Despite pitching with the shoulder problem most of last year, Riedling had an excellent year. He was 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA in 29 games. He allowed only 22 hits in 33 2/3 innings.
If he's healthy the entire year, Riedling will strengthen an already strong bullpen.
Exactly what his role will be remains to be seen.
We haven't talked about it, he said. I'm just concentrating on getting healthy.
TRICKLING IN:
Saturday was the day pitchers and catchers had to report to Sarasota. But there was no set time they had to show up.
As of noon, only 27 of the 43 pitchers and catchers invited to camp had shown up. But all 43 were expected.
FIRST WORKOUT:
The pitchers and catchers will go through physicals this morning. The first official workout is at 1p.m. Reds manager Bob Boone said the Reds would work for about two hours.
NO NIGEL:
The Reds were expecting to have 71 players in camp. But that's down to 70. Nigel Wilson, a 32-year-old outfielder who played in Japan last year, decided to return to play in Japan rather than come to camp with the Reds.
SOLD OUT:
Opening Day tickets sold out Saturday in 26 minutes. That breaks the record of 55 minutes, set last year.
