Reds, Shaw disagree again

Contract talks briefly revived

By Gary Estwick
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A resumption in negotiations between the Reds and free-agent reliever Jeff Shaw resulted in offers from both sides — but still no deal.

Last week, the Reds offered Shaw a deal believed to be worth $300,000 for 2002 and $3 million for 2003. Shaw's agent, Joe Bick, responded with an undisclosed counter-offer, which Reds general manager Jim Bowden turned down Monday.

The two sides have talked since late November. Shaw, a former Red who lives in Washington Court House, has said he will play for the Reds this season or retire. The Reds have said they would love to have Shaw but are limited financially.

“We hope there's still a chance,” said Reds assistant general manager Doc Rodgers. “There's too many positive things about it to have it not get done.”

Last December, Bick proposed a 1-year deal with $1.5 million in base salary and $4 million in deferred payments over 10 years after Shaw retired. The Reds did not counter the offer.

And after an idle weekend, the latest talks to return Shaw to the Reds ended yet again.

Both Rodgers and Bick said neither side has set a time limit for negotiating a deal.

Shaw, 35, saved 43 games for Los Angeles last year. The Dodgers exercised the buyout option in his contract, making Shaw a free agent.

Bick said Shaw has not entertained more lucrative offers from other big-league teams.

“He can afford to make that decision,” Bick said. “As Jeff's kids get older, he wants to be involved in their sports and school activities. It's a very high priority for him. If he was playing here, there's still a significant amount of time he would spent away from home, but not nearly as much compared to another team.”

Reds pitchers and catchers report Saturday to spring training in Sarasota, Fla.
