The Reds presented Adam Dunn with the Sheldon Chief Bender Award at the LaSalle High School Sports Stag Wednesday as the Reds' minor-league player of the year.
The award was renamed to honor Chief Bender, the Reds' senior adviser for player development.
Bender is in his 61st year in baseball and 36th with the Reds. He was in charge of the Reds' minor-league operation from 1967-89 and is widely credited with developing many players for the Big Red Machine.
Dunn, 22, had an outstanding minor-league season in 2001 before being promoted to the big-league club. He combined to hit .334 with 32 home runs, 84 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 94 games at Triple-A Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga.
Despite the July promotion, Dunn finished among the top five Reds minor-leaguers in all triple crown categories: first in homers, second in batting average and fifth in RBI.
