MacRae, Piersoll set for minors


Can't pitch for Reds until May 15

        The Reds will have 37 pitchers in major league camp. That'sa big number when considering they are competing for 11 or 12 roster spots. But not all of the invitees have a chance.

        Some will barely get a look.

        Two players who helped the Reds last year — Scott MacRae and Chris Piersoll — contractually cannot make the Opening Day roster.

        MacRae and Piersoll were released in November to make room on the 40-man roster for younger players like Austin Kearns, Ricardo Aramboles and Ben Broussard.

        Because they were released after Aug. 31 they aren't eligible to pitch with the big league club that released them until May 15.

        “They'll be at Triple A,” Reds General Manager Jim Bowden said. “They can help us if we have injuries. But our priority was protecting the young players.”

        MacRae and Piersoll each made their major league debut last year. MacRae, a 27-year-old right-hander, was 0-1 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 appearances.

        Right-hander Piersoll, 24, was 0-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 11 appearances.

        “I was aware of what they were doing,” MacRae said. "I've only been in the big leagues 70 days. I'm glad I signed.
