Reese cut loose from Red Sox

Former Reds 2B now free agent

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Reds can get Pokey Reese back — if they want him.

The Boston Red Sox, who traded for Reese Wednesday, “nontendered” him Friday. That means Reese becomes a free agent.

But don't expect him to be back at Cinergy.

“He's a free agent, so we're talking to a number of clubs,” said Reese's agent, Mike Nicotera.

Does Nicotera think Reese will return to the Reds?

“No!” Nicotera said. “Well, let's put this way: We haven't heard from the Reds.”

Reese has gone from the Reds to the Colorado Rockies to the Red Sox to limbo in one week.

The Red Sox would have had to offer Reese at least $2.5million to keep him. Boston signed center fielder Johnny Damon to a $31 million, four-year contract Friday.

“Financially, we didn't have the capability to fit (Reese) in with our structure when we signed Johnny,” Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette told the Boston media.

Duquette added that the Red Sox will try to sign Reese for less money.

Reese won Gold Gloves in 1999 and 2000. But his batting average has gone from .285 to .255 to .224 over the past three seasons.

He made $3.1 million last season.
