Diamondbacks close to deal with Wells
Red Sox: Done deal?
The Cincinnati Enquirer and wire reports
PHOENIX The World Series champion Arizona Diamondbacks are on the brink of adding left-hander David Wells.
Wells needs to pass a physical exam, and other minor details need to be worked out. Gregg Clifton, Wells' agent, said Wells expects to sign a one-year deal loaded with incentives shortly after the new year.
We hit it off well. He's happy. We're happy. We've agreed to agree, Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo said Thursday. There's some I's to dot and T's to cross and a physical to take. I fully expect him to be in a Diamondback uniform next year, and he's looking forward to it.
Wells was 5-7 with a 4.47 ERA in 16 starts for the Chicago White Sox this year. His season was cut short because of back surgery.
RED SOX:
In what would be a record deal, Boston's limited partners voted unanimously to sell the team for $660 million to a group led by Marlins owner John Henry and former Padres owner Tom Werner.
The team said the agreement also included $40 million in assumed debt, bringing the total to $700 million. The sale must be approved by 75 percent of the 30 baseball owners.
The current record is the $323 million Larry Dolan paid for the Indians last year.
The record price for a sports franchise is $800 million, paid by Daniel Snyder in 1999 for the NFL's Washington Redskins.
Boston is close to signing free agent outfielder Johnny Damon to a four-year deal worth about $30 million. Damon hit .256 with nine homers and 49 RBI last season for Oakland.
DODGERS:
Free agent pitcher Hideo Nomo agreed to a two-year deal with Los Angeles. He led the American League in strikeouts last season with 220 and was 13-10 with a 4.50 ERA.
BRAVES:
Right-hander Albie Lopez agreed to a one-year contract after going a combined 9-19 with Tampa Bay and Arizona last season.
WHITE SOX:
Infielder Tony Graffanino re-signed for two years and $1.25 million. He hit .303 with two homers and 15 RBI last season.
PHILLIES:
Infielder Tomas Perez agreed to a $475,000, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. In 62 games last season, Perez hit a career-best .304 with three home runs and 19 RBI.
BREWERS:
Right-hander Jeff D'Amico agreed to a $1.84 million contract. He was 2-4 with a 6.08 ERA for Milwaukee last season.
