Reds add 2 pitchers to 40-man roster

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Reds continued to re-tool their 40-man roster Friday, purchasing the contracts of right-handed pitchers Ricardo Aramboles and Chris Booker.

Spots opened when Ruben Rivera was claimed off waivers by San Francisco and the Reds released right-hander Scott MacRae.

Rivera hit .255 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI for the Reds last season. He declined a $1million option for next season, and the Reds probably wouldn't have offered him arbitration.

Aramboles and Booker are players the Reds had to add to the 40-man roster or risk losing in the Rule 5 Draft.

The Reds traded Mark Wohlers to the New York Yankees for Aramboles, 19, on June 30. After the trade, Aramboles split time between Single-A Dayton and Double-A Chattanooga, combining to go 1-4 with a 5.02 ERA.

Booker, 24, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 20 in the Michael Tucker trade. Booker was 4-6 with a 4.24 ERA with two saves and 101 strikeouts in 61 games this year.

The Reds hope to re-sign MacRae, 27, to a minor-league contract. He made his major-league debut for them this year and went 0-1 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 games with the Reds.
