Clemens wins 6th Cy Young award

Baseball notebook

Enquirer news services

NEW YORK — Roger Clemens won his record sixth Cy Young Award on Thursday, receiving 21 of 28 first-place votes for the American League honor.

The Rocket, who led the New York Yankees to their fourth straight AL pennant, also received five second-place votes and two thirds for 122 points from a panel of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

“I was just happy I was able to win one in pinstripes,” Clemens said from his home in the Houston area.

Clemens, 20-3 with a 3.51 ERA and 213 strikeouts, is the only pitcher to win more than four Cy Youngs. Arizona's Randy Johnson won his fourth on Tuesday, matching Steve Carlton and Greg Maddux.

        CONTRACTION:

A judge delayed his decision on whether to extend a court order that prevents the Minnesota Twins from being eliminated.

In a lawsuit that could block the decision by baseball owners to get rid of two teams before next season, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission obtained a temporary restraining order last week against the team and major league baseball requiring the Twins to play at the Metrodome in 2002, the final year of their lease.

Hennepin County District Judge Harry Crump held a hearing Thursday on whether to issue a temporary injunction against the Twins and baseball pending a trial. After 90 minutes of oral arguments from lawyers, Crump said he is likely to rule within a couple of days.

        PADRES:

Phil Nevin, who resurrected his career with San Diego, has agreed to a $34 million, four-year contract extension, the richest deal in club history.

The Padres also named former first baseman Wally Joyner as special assistant to general manager Kevin Towers.

        CUBS:

Outfielder Michael Tucker exercised his option and will return to Chicago next season. Tucker, who made $1.8 million last season, will get a salary of $2.25 million in 2002.

Tucker, 30, was acquired by the Cubs last July 20 from Cincinnati for pitchers Chris Booker and Ben Shaffar.

        ORIOLES:

Baltimore is trying to trade outfielder Brady Anderson and probably will release him if it can't find a taker by next Tuesday.

Anderson, 37, lost his role as the Orioles' leadoff hitter last season. He batted .202 with eight home runs and 45 RBI.

        CAMINITI CASE:

Former NL MVP Ken Caminiti posted $2,000 bond and was freed from jail after being arrested on drug possession charges.

Authorities said they found Caminiti in a Houston hotel room with crack cocaine. A court appearance for him was set for today.

        DODGERS:

Terry Collins, the former manager of the Anaheim Angels and Houston Astros, rejoined the Los Angeles organization as minor-league field coordinator.

Collins, 52, was an infielder in the Dodgers' system from 1975-1980, then managed for them in the minors from 1981-88.

        RED SOX:

General manager Dan Duquette wants to keep Carl Everett in Boston with an improved attitude, rather than try to trade him.

“We made it very clear that some of the behavior we saw last year is not going to be tolerated by the Red Sox,” Duquette said, adding that he had spelled out his concerns to Everett in writing several times.

“We would prefer Carl to address our considerations. He's 29 years old. He's a five-tool player, a switch hitter with power. We're hopeful that he'll do what he has to do to get himself ready.”
