PHOENIX Former Red Mark Wohlers was left off the New York Yankees' roster for the World Series.
Wohlers appeared in one game in the ALCS. He allowed a run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. New York manager Joe Torre said the ALCS was not the deciding factor in keeping Wohlers off the roster.
The fact that he has not pitched a lot was more instrumental in my making the decision, Torre said. In order to be effective, for any pitcher, you have to pitch regularly, especially someone who is used to pitching every day as a closer or set-up man. But we haven't used him that way, because we have other people.
The Reds traded Wohlers to the Yankees for right-handed prospect Ricardo Aramboles on June 30. Aramboles was 1-2 with a 3.66 ERA at Single-A Dayton and 0-2 with an 8.00 ERA at Double-A Chattanooga.
Wohlers was 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA for the Reds. He was 1-0 with a a 4.54 ERA after the trade. He was 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his last nine games of the regular season.
Torre's decision was tough.
It was, Torre said. He's a guy I'd go to war with.
LINEUP CHANGE: Andy Pettitte usually looks forward to getting a rare chance to hit in the World Series.
Not this year.
Pettitte, a left-hander, has the tough task of matching up with Arizona's nasty lefty,Randy Johnson, in Game 2 of the World Series tonight.
It's exciting for us in the American League because we want to hit, but it's kind of a bummer I have to face him, Pettitte said. It looks like I might be the only left-hander in the lineup.
New York Yankees manager Joe Torre is following the pattern most managers do when they face the Big Unit, loading up the lineup with as many righty bats as possible.
Well, I'm looking forward to facing Andy Pettitte, Johnson said. Over the last three or four years, I don't think it's any secret that I predominantly have faced right-handed lineups. I think managers feel like that's their best chance. So it will be no shock tomorrow to find a right-handed lineup.
Torre will play Shane Spencer instead of lefties Paul O'Neill and David Justice in right field and also might sit first baseman Tino Martinez against the Diamondbacks on Sunday night.
Randy Velarde, who has a .452 career average against Johnson, probably will be in the lineup either at first for Martinez or third base for Scott Brosius.
