Reds raise prices for premium seats
By John Erardi
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The best Reds seats will cost more next season. The 10,246 blue boxes and the choicest 4,011 green boxes will go up $4 and $3, respectively, in 2002.
Prices for the other 25,750 seats in Cinergy Field will remain the same.
This means the 7,096 Blue Box/Zone A seats will cost $32, up from $28; the 3,150 Blue/Zone B seats will go for $24, up from $21; Green Box/Zone A will cost $24, up from $21.
The best blue seats were hiked $7 going into last year; that's an $11 hike in two years. Seats that were $14 in 1998 are $32 now.
John Allen, the Reds' chief operating officer, was not available for comment. But he hinted in an interview earlier this month that some ticket prices were going up.
I think you'll see some ticket prices change and some not change, he said. We feel we need (to maintain) a tiered pricing structure that fits all socioeconomic levels, both here and at (Great American Ball Park in 2003).
The Reds finished fifth in the six-team National League Central, 27 games out of first place.
Their 600,000 drop in attendance this year was baseball's biggest: We had forecast and budgeted it would be down some, but we didn't think the drop-off would be that dramatic, Allen said earlier this month.
The payroll figures to go up in 2003. Great American Ball Park is expected to generate between $20 million and $30 million more per year than Cinergy Field.
