Reds Notebook

Walker not worried as club hits road

By Dave Bennett and John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Reds embarked Thursday on their first road trip since the Sept.11 terrorist attacks, but Todd Walker wasn't concerned about the team's security while traveling to Milwaukee.

“The main reason is that we know everybody on our flight, and that's reassuring,” the second baseman said of the team's charter flights. As for commercial flights, he said: “Every airline ought to know the backgrounds of the people flying on it by now. I would think that flying right now is safer than at any other time.”

Walker said he wasn't concerned about the players' safety at ballparks other than Cinergy Field, either. The Reds travel to Philadelphia after this weekend's series at Milwaukee's Miller Park.

“I think every ballpark has taken the precautions that are necessary,” he said. “I don't really worry about anything happening on the baseball field.”

Traveling secretary Gary Wahoff would not discuss specific measures the Reds have taken but said the team had tightened security since last week.

The players “have already noticed,” he said. “We've talked about it and they've had questions.

“We feel some level of comfort knowing that we've taken precautions.”

SR. UPDATE: Ken Griffey Sr. has been released from the hospital and is resting comfortably at home. He will remain in Cincinnati while the team plays at Milwaukee.

“He sounded like my father,” Ken Griffey Jr. said. “He said, "You're pulling; you're doing this.' And he didn't even see (Wednesday's) game.”

The fatherly advice must have worked. Junior broke an 0-for-12 skid with a single in the first inning Thursday.

Senior had been in the hospital since Monday. He was taken there after suffering shortness of breath.

NIGHT OF HEROES: Reds wives raised $3,500 for the Heroes' Fund with a raffle.
