Reds Notebook
Hamilton in; Reitsma, Reyes out
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Manager Bob Boone set the rotation for the rest of the homestand but stopped short of setting it for the rest of the year.
Joey Hamilton will start tonight as expected. He will be followed by Jim Brower, Lance Davis and Jose Acevedo.
That means Brower is in for now, and Chris Reitsma and Dennys Reyes are out.
The changes came because of last week's break and the Reds' desire to put Hamilton in the rotation. There was a long list of candidates to remove.
The last lap around everyone kind of (was bad), Boone said.
Why Brower?
Good question, Boone said. He is that swing kind of guy who you can keep abusing starting and long relieving. I'd like to use him that way next year.
Reitsma went 2 2/3 innings and allowed six runs in his last start. and allowed six runs.
He made seven or eight mistakes, Boone said. That's usually a sign of fatigue.
Boone said he may give Reyes another start. Reyes was 1-4 with a 6.51 ERA in six starts.
I'd like to start, Reyes said. But it's not my decision.
HAPPY TO HAVE HIM: Boone was pleased the Reds picked up the option on utilityman Wilton Guerrero.
Wilton's done a terrific job for us, Boone said. He's been much better offensively and defensively since than we saw in spring. He's been a valuable piece for us.
Guerrero entered Tuesday's game hitting .318 in 45 games for the Reds, including .341 (8-for-25) as a pinch-hitter.
TRANSACTIONS: The Reds outrighted infielder Bill Selby and right-handed pitchers Scott Winchester and Chris Nichting to Triple-A Louisville to open spots on the 40-man roster.
Selby and Winchester accepted the assignment. Nichting, who was upset and criticized the Reds when he was demoted to Louisville on Aug. 26, opted for free agency.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Hamilton faces Chicago right-hander Kerry Wood (10-6, 3.48 ERA) in the second game of the three-game series.
Hamilton was 5-8 with 5.89 ERA before being released by Toronto. Blue Jays. He last start was July 29. He allowed eight runs in five innings in a 9-3 loss to the New York Yankees.
