Cubs miss Gordon in ninth
The Associated Press
The Chicago Cubs may have to fight for a wild-card berth without closer Tom Gordon, who's been bothered by a sore right elbow.
Manager Don Baylor revealed after Tuesday's game that Gordon had an MRI exam Monday that found no damage.
There's no telling when he'll be available.
I'm pretty close, Gordon said. Today I played catch and it felt a lot better. I threw off the mound Saturday, and on Sunday it didn't feel good at all.
The Reds scored three runs in the ninth off Kyle Farnsworth, who had not gotten a save chance this season and hasn't saved a game since July 29 last year.
Starter Jon Lieber, who came in 4-0 against the Reds this season, had an off night. Lieber, who had allowed a total of three runs in his four victories, walked three and hit two batters in 5 2-3 innings. He had walked only 33 batters in his other 30 starts.
Cubs Notes: Matt Stairs started at first base for Chicago in place of Fred McGriff and hit a solo homer. McGriff has a tender left hamstring. ... Cubs LHP Felix Heredia had an emergency appendectomy at a hospital in Cincinnati on Tuesday afternoon. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
