Hamilton gets first start Wednesday

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Joey Hamilton will make his Reds debut in Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs at Cinergy Field. Elmer Dessens will start Tuesday when the Reds resume play.

The rest of the rotation remains to be determined.

Hamilton, the 31-year-old right-hander, made two rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville.

CALLUPS: When the Reds resume baseball Tuesday, they will have three new players on the roster.

First baseman D.T. Cromer, outfielder Raul Gonzalez and knuckleballer Jared Fernandez were called up from Triple-A Louisville.

The RiverBats' season ended when the club was declared International League champion after the IL championship series was canceled because of the terrorist attacks.

Cromer had three differ ent stints with the Reds. He hit .285 with 11 homers and 47 RBI in 62 games at Louisville.

Fernandez, 29, has never played in the big leagues. He was 10-9 with a 4.13 ERA at Louisville.

Gonzalez, 27, played in three games with the Chicago Cubs last year. He struck out in both his at-bats. He hit .299 with 11 homers, 66 RBI and 90 runs scored at Louisville.

CALLED UP ... SORT OF: The Reds also had Ruben Mateo join the club. Mateo, the outfielder obtained in the Rob Bell trade with Texas, will work out and condition with the team, but is not on the active roster.

“Essentially we wanted to make him feel part of the organization,” assistant general manager Doc Rodgers said. “We're still very, very high on him. He's been a major-league player the last two years.”

The Reds' training staff will put Mateo on a special conditioning and strengthening program. Mateo fractured his right femur June 2, 2000.

“It's been a struggle,” Rodgers said. “Our medical people said when we traded for him that this type of injury takes a good year before a player's 100 percent. We want him back to where he was before the injury, before spring training starts next year.”
