Hamilton likely to join rotation
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
PITTSBURGH Joey Hamilton will join the Reds Monday. Then we'll decide what we're going to do with him, Reds manager Bob Boone said.
It's hard to imagine the Reds not giving Hamilton a start. He threw five innings of shutout ball Friday in his second start for Triple-A Louisville. His fastball topped out at 93 mph.
I talked to (Louisville manager) Dave Miley, Boone said. He said (Hamilton's) mechanics were much better.
The Reds are hoping Hamilton, a right-hander who turns 31 today, can regain the form he had before shoulder surgery. Hamilton went 55-44 with a 3.83 ERA in five years with San Diego.
He didn't have that kind of success with Toronto, particularly after shoulder surgery in 2000. That led to his release Aug.4.
I'd like to see what he can do, Boone said. ... It takes a while in most cases to come back (from shoulder surgery). I'm sure he'll be stronger next spring.
The Reds have no guarantee Hamilton will come back with them. He's a free agent after this season.
