Reds Notebook

Boone back in full swing

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

PITTSBURGH - Aaron Boone was back in the lineup for the third straight game — further indication that the fractured bone is his wrist is healed.

“As bad as he swung (Friday), he said that was the best he's felt,” Bob Boone said.

INCOMPLETE: The Reds entered Saturday with two complete games — one by Elmer Dessens, one by Lance Davis. They look like a cinch to break the franchise record for the fewest.

The 1997 team had five complete games.

The Reds are tied with Texas for the second-fewest complete games. Tampa Bay has one.

The major-league record low is two (Oakland, 1997; Milwaukee, 1998 and 2000).

FIELD TRIP: Sean Casey's outing to the Pittsburgh-South Florida college football included 23 players and staff.

“Everyone showed,” Casey said. “I told them, "You better be 100 percent sure you're coming, or you don't get a ticket.'”

The fans left the Reds alone for the most part.

“A couple people came up to (Ken Griffey Jr.),” Casey said. “But we had so many people, we had a section to ourselves.”

The highlight? Mexican players Juan Castro and Dennys Reyes showing up in Pitt visors and Pitt Mardi Gras beads.

It was Reyes' first football game ever.

“It was pretty good,” Reyes said. “I heard it was boring, but it wasn't.”

FARM REPORT: Louisville took a 2-1 lead in its best-of-five series with a 1-0 victory over Norfolk Friday night. Double-A Chattanooga beat Jacksonville 7-6 in 15 innings to go up 2-1 in its series.

Both Single-A teams lost. Bakersfield beat Mudville 6-2 to win the best-of-three series. South Bend beat Dayton 8-3 in the series opener.

Rookie League Billings beat Provo 10-4 in its series opener.

UP NEXT: Dennys Reyes (1-6, 5.15 ERA) starts the series finale against Pittsburgh right-hander Ryan Vogelsong (0-4, 6.54).

Could this be it for Reyes as a starter? He is 0-4 with a 7.54 ERA in five starts.
