Pirates pitcher ends long wait
Dave Williams finally got the result that he deserved. The Pirates rookie allowed three hits in 6 1-3 innings to win for the first time in more than two months, 7-0 over the Reds on Saturday night.
Williams did an outstanding job, Pittsburgh manager Lloyd McClendon said. He was aggressive with his fastball, and he did a good job with his curve. If you look at his ERA, it's indicative of the way he's pitched. His record has been deceiving.
Williams (2-6), who hadn't won since his first career start June 25 against Milwaukee, walked none and struck out six. He had lost six straight decisions, but has a 3.87 ERA.
I can't worry about the wins and losses, Williams said. I can only try to keep us in the game.
The first loss in that streak came against the Reds on July 5 despite allowing just one earned run in six innings.
Kevin Young hit a three-run double as Pittsburgh broke the game open with five runs in the eighth inning.
It was a big hit, but David Williams set it up, Young said. Anytime you shut down a good-hitting team, it's a good win. It gives him confidence.
Pirates Notes: The Pirates have nine shutouts this season ... Pittsburgh's Aramis Ramirez extended his hitting streak to eight games with a third-inning single ... Warren Morris's pinch-hit appearance for Pittsburgh in the eighth was his first since Aug. 12. He was activated from the disabled list before the game.
