Fan's-eye view of the Reds

Banner of the week: “Dunn proud”

That was hung in Houston Wednesday night in support of Texan Adam Dunn. He did the home state fans proud, homering in each of the final two games to set an NL rookie record with 12 home runs in a month.

How about a W: Elmer Dessens needs a victory, in an estimated five starts, in order for the Reds to avoid a dubious distinction.

Should Dessens go winless, the Reds would fail to have a 10-game winner for the first time since 1900.

That is, barring a four-win finish from Chris Reitsma or Lance Davis.

Remember him?: Sean Casey, hitting .323, is on pace to lead the Reds in hitting for the second time in three years.

Casey hit .315 last season but didn't lead the team, following a .332 performance in 1999. Remember who led the Reds in batting last season? Answer below.

        Putting bat on ball:

The difference between the Expos' and Astros' young pitchers and the Reds'? Power.

The Reds struck out 57 times in their six games on their just-completed road trip.

Bad to worse: The Reds entered the weekend on pace for 97 losses. Even if they finish the season 14-13, they would finish 68-94. How bad is that?

It would be the Reds' second-worst record since 1938.

Only the 1982 team that went 61-101 (.377) was worse. to match that, they would have to go 7-20.

The answers: Chris Stynes led the Reds in 2000 with a .334 batting average. He was dealt to Boston in the offseason for outfielder Michael Coleman and infielder Donnie Sadler. Remember them?
