Bowden: Boone is 'our manager'
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Reds general manager Jim Bowden gave manager Bob Boone an endorsement for 2002 Saturday.
He's our manager, Bowden said.
Are there any circumstances under which he wouldn't be back?
He's our manager, Bowden said.
Chief operating officer John Allen said he also sees Boone coming back.
But that's really a question for Jim, Allen said.
Boone signed a two-year contract when he was hired Oct.3. The Reds entered Saturday night 54-80. That projects to a 65-97 record. The Reds have only lost as many as 97 games three times in their history: 101 in 1981, 99 in '34, 98 in '37.
It's not his fault that half our pitching staff had injuries, Bowden said. We lost a lot of position players too. He's done a good job in a nightmare season.
Boone has referred to next year a lot recently when discussing the club, but he says that has nothing to do with a two-year contract. It's irrelevant to me, the length of the contract, he said. You can still get fired at any time.
No.1 starter Pete Har nisch and relievers Scott Williamson and John Riedling, shortstop Barry Larkin, third baseman Aaron Boone and center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. were lost for major portions of the season.
