Reds lose rights to Sowers
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
HOUSTON - No.1 draft pick Jeremy Sowers did attend class at Vanderbilt Wednesday. That means the Reds lose the signing rights to him. Sowers cannot be drafted again until after his junior year.
RIJO WILD: Jose Rijo threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth. He got out of further bases-loaded trouble by striking out Julio Logo and popping up Jeff Bagwell.
Rijo, in the fourth major league game of his comeback, gave up two singles, walked Craig Biggio intentionally and struck out two in his only inning.
WITH ADMIRATION: Houston has one of the best lineups in baseball. But Boone doesn't think it's the reason the Astros are up by four games in the National League Central.
It's that pitching staff, he said. You've got to give credit to their scouting staff to fall into three kids like they did.
He was referring to starters Roy Oswalt, Carlos Hernandez and Wade Miller.
The bullpen has closer Billy Wagner and setup man Octavio Dotel. They are backed up by Mike Jackson and Mike Williams, both former closers.
FARM REPORT: The way catcher Corky Miller is going, he would seem like a lock for a callup when Louisville completes its playoff run. Miller went 5-for-5 Wednesday with a double, two home runs and four RBI. He's hitting .331 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 41 games since being promoted from Double-A Chattanooga.
Miller, 25, was signed by the Reds as an undrafted free agent in 1998.
