Dunn breaks slump with big weekend
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
MONTREAL Adam Dunn was discussing his funk at the plate with a reporter Friday. As the conversation ended, Dunn said:
I'm going to get out of it ... tonight.
Dunn was off by one day. He followed his first three-hit game with his first four-hit game Sunday in the Reds' 17-4 victory over the Montreal Expos. Among Dunn's hits Sunday were two doubles and his 11th home run of the year. He scored three runs and drove in three.
He went from .249 to .279 in two days, Reds manager Bob Boone said.
Actually, it was .244 to .277. It looks like Dunn, who was 1-for-13 and 4-for-30 entering Saturday, has come out of the funk.
So far, he said. It's a couple of days. I'm just trying to take it one at-bat at a time.
Both Dunn and newcomer Robin Jennings came up just short of the cycle Sunday.
Needing a triple, Dunn doubled in the seventh inning. He made no effort to stretch it. Dmitri Young, Aaron Boone and Ken Griffey Jr. all were thrown out trying to stretch doubles into triples this year while attempting to hit for the cycle.
And Dunn?
Triples are overrated. Too much running. The only way I'm going get a triple is if it rattles around, he kicks it, and a bird comes down and picks it up.
Jennings came up a home run short. He knew what he needed in his last at-bat. He popped out to third.
I might have swung a little hard, he said. I was definitely trying to get on top of the ball.
The last Red to hit for the cycle? Eric Davis in 1989.
