Sowers looks set to spurn Reds
The Associated Press
Left-hander Jeremy Sowers moved into his dorm room at Vanderbilt on Saturday, leaving little chance he'll sign with the Reds.
The Reds will lose rights to their top draft pick when he attends his first class Wednesday.
Sowers, from Ballard High School in Louisville, was the 20th overall pick in June's draft. Unless the Reds increase their offer by several million dollars, they'll come up empty.
General manager Jim Bowden said a few days ago that he was pessimistic about signing Sowers. Kasey McKeon, the Reds' director of scouting, didn't return a phone message left at his office. We're all here at Vanderbilt getting Jeremy into his dorm room, his father, Rob Campbell, said in an interview Saturday evening. Kasey McKeon called yesterday to say they didn't have any more money to offer.
When the Reds drafted him, they knew his price was more than $3 million. They're not even halfway there.
Based upon his talk with McKeon, Campbell doubts the Reds will make an offer close to the asking price.
