Return to Reds works for Jennings
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Outfielder Robin Jennings, who was called up Saturday by the Reds, has a history with the team.
The Reds acquired Jennings July 28 last year after he was released by the Minnesota Twins. He appeared in 32 games with Triple-A Louisville, hitting .377 with five home runs and 27 RBI.
But he left the RiverBats after he wasn't promoted to the Reds when the roster was expanded Sept.1. He was released five days later.
He began this season in the Oakland A's organization, then was traded to Colorado for Ron Gant and cash on July 3.
He was with the Colorado organization for 16 days before being traded to the Reds, along with Todd Walker, for Alex Ochoa.
In his three Triple-A stops this year, Jennings combined to hit .301 with 15 homers and 46 RBI.
Reds manager Bob Boone said the move to bring up Jennings was made because, with Aaron Boone (broken wrist) and Dmitri Young (sore hamstring) out, he will get playing time now.
If we waited until Louisville's through with the playoffs, Aaron and Dmitri would be back, and it would be harder to evaluate him, Bob Boone said.
Jennings, 29, is a left-handed hitter. He had three brief stints in the majors with the Chicago Cubs, hitting .210 with six RBI in 45 games.
RIJO ROLE: Chris Nichting's departure he was optioned to Louisville to make room for Jennings means more innings for Jose Rijo, in more important situations.
But I still think we have to baby Jose a little bit, although he always tells me he's ready, said Boone.
Going into Saturday's game, Rijo had pitched two two-inning stints, both in mop-up roles in losses.
POKEY OUT: Pokey Reese was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup because of sore knees. With Boone and Young already out, it gave the lineup a makeshift look.
Wilton Guerrero led off and played third. He was followed by left fielder Adam Dunn, center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., first baseman Sean Casey, right fielder Ruben Rivera, second baseman Todd Walker, shortstop Juan Castro and catcher Jason LaRue.
It was the 102nd different lineup for the Reds this season.
MR. AUGUST? Griffey has won a truckload of baseball awards, but he's never been National League player of the month.
That could change.
Griffey was among the NL leaders for the month in average (.356), home runs (10) and RBI (24).
AARON UPDATE: Aaron Boone said he could play third base right now.
How about hitting? To answer, Boone got a bat and swung it a couple times.
I feels a lot better than (it did Friday), he said. I'll ease into Tuesday, start batting practice by the end of the Houston series (Friday), then hopefully play next weekend.
Boone has been on the disabled list since Aug.15.
