Reds Notebook

Reds won't get 2 million fans

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

At the current pace, the Reds will draw 1.9 million fans at Cinergy Field this season. That's down 27 percent from last year when they drew 2,577,351 — the second-highest total in club history.

The Reds don't release what their season-ticket base is, but the last four days have showed it is around 19,000. The Reds drew 19,323, 19,571, 19,334 and 23,887 for the four games with St. Louis.

A weekday series against Philadelphia for similar dates in August last year drew 21,558, 22,470, 20,255 and 25,745.

NO NUXIE: Radio announcer Joe Nuxhall will miss the Montreal series to attend a family function. Dan Hoard, the play-by-play man for University of Cincinnati basketball and football, will fill in on the WLW-AM (700) broadcasts.

DMITRI OUT: Dmitri Young sat out for the second straight game because of a tight right hamstring.

“He can still feel it,” Boone said. “I'm pretty paranoid about legs. I told him I was going to (give him two days).”

AARON UPDATE: Aaron Boone's fractured right wrist is feeling better now that he has had the cast removed.

“There was big improvement from (Wednesday to Thursday),” he said. “The range of motion is much better.”

Boone hasn't been able to hit or throw yet.

“It will tell me when I'm ready, I guess,” he said.

HOW-GOOD-INGTON: Farm director Tim Naehring was in Chattanooga to see Ty Howington throw seven innings of two-hit, shutout ball Tuesday night.

“It was amazing,” Naehring said. “I've seen him pitch 10 to 12 times. That's the best he's looked as a Red. His fastball was working. He had a very good curveball. He only had to use his change-up three times.”

Howington, the left-hander who was the Reds' No.1 pick in 1999, is dominating in Double-A. He is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA and has allowed only 22 hits in 30 innings while striking out 29.

The Reds are unlikely to call him up Sept.1 because he's not on the 40-man roster.

Austin Kearns, the No.1 pick in 1998, hit his first home run since returning to Chattanooga after his thumb injury.

“He looks good,” Naehring said. “He holds the bat deeper in his hand than most players, so he'll probably aggravate the thumb some. But his swing is good. His bat speed is back. He's made some plays in right field. You forget how good his arm is.”
