Boone goes on DL again

3B's wrist found to be fractured

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS — The Reds lost third baseman Aaron Boone for two to four weeks with a fractured right wrist.

Boone, who was hit by a pitch in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals, will fly back to Cincinnati today to be examined by team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek.

Boone was hit by a Matt Morris pitch in the ninth inning Tuesday. The ball struck him on the outside of his wrist, just above his hand. The injury was not thought to be serious until X-rays revealed the break.

Boone spent a month on the disabled list from May 15 to June 15 after suffering a broken hamate bone in his right hand after being hit by a pitch from Houston's Wade Miller.

“It's frustrating,” Boone said. “A couple of freak things. The good news is it sounds like it will only be a couple of weeks.”

Boone was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Jose Rijo is expected to be added to the roster Friday.

Boone will be the sixth key player to miss more than a month this season for the Reds. Barry Larkin, Pete Harnisch and Scott Williamson all are out for the year. Ken Griffey Jr. and John Riedling missed major portions of the season before returning.

Dmitri Young started at third base Wednesday night. Brady Clark played Young's left field position. That probably will be the lineup the

Reds use most games until Boone's return, manager Bob Boone said.

“Probably,” Boone said. “I want to think about it some. But it will be close to what you saw (Wednesday).”

The Associated Press Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds follows through on a three-run homer off Reds starter Chris Reitsma Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.
