Davis keeps ball over the plate
The Associated Press
Lance Davis got a no-decision for one of the Reds' best pitching performances of the season.
Davis, who hasn't lost since the All-Star break, turned a 6-2 lead over to the bullpen after the seventh, when manager Bob Boone decided to pinch hit for him. The Rockies rallied in the ninth for a 7-6 win.
The most impressive thing about Davis: He threw strikes.
Davis allowed only six hits three by Larry Walker and two runs in seven innings. He threw 71 pitches, 53 of them strikes.
Starting with the first batter in the third inning, he threw 19 consecutive strikes. Through four innings, he had thrown 34 strikes and only eight balls. He didn't go to three balls on any batter, and got to a two-ball count on only five batters.
I don't keep track. I just really concentrate on throwing strikes, he said. I really try to avoid walking people.
Boone was second-guessed for taking Davis out of the game in the seventh after only 71 pitches, with the bottom of the Rockies' order due up the next inning. Davis felt fine and could have kept going.
I thought about it, but he had struggled with the middle of the order, Boone said. I thought we could hold that lead.
