Sullivan can set iron-man mark

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Reliever Scott Sullivan has taken the major-league lead in relief innings pitched this season. He is seeking to become the first pitcher to lead baseball in that category for four straight years.

“There's a lot of season left,” he said. “There's nothing to talk about.”

Sullivan was troubled early by back problems. But since June 12, he has a 1.95 ERA over 28 games and 37 innings pitched. His ERA was 4.06 before that.

“I didn't start out slow — I started out crawling,” he said. “It's good to be healthy.”

POKEY STILL OUT: Pokey Reese missed his third straight start with a stomach ailment.

“I feel a whole lot better,” he said. “But I'm still not ready.”

Reese hasn't been able to eat since leaving in the first inning of Tuesday's game.

ALEX BACK: Alex Ochoa, traded to the Rockies for Todd Walker on July 19, made his first trip back to Cinergy. He sounded a little homesick.

“It's an adjustment,” he said. “I really liked it in Cincinnati. I'm not going to deny that. But they're giving me an opportunity.”

Ochoa is hitting .303 since the trade. But he hasn't taken advantage of what Coors Field is famous for.

“I don't have a homer there yet,” he said.

MO BETTER PENA: Wily Mo Pena had a huge night Thursday in Single-A Dayton's 21-5 victory over Cedar Rapids. He hit three home runs and had six RBI.

Pena, acquired from the New York Yankees in the Drew Henson trade, has 22 home runs and 96 RBI. He is one of only three players in all the minor leagues with 20 homers and 20 stolen bases this season.

ON SOWERS: Reds manager Bob Boone liked what he saw from top draft pick Jeremy Sowers, for the most part.

“His command and breaking ball were good,” Boone said. “But I didn't see the velocity they were talking about.”

UP NEXT: Right-hander Jose Acevedo (2-3, 5.74) faces left-hander Brian Bohanon (5-7, 6.58) in the second game of the series with Colorado, tonight at 7:05
