Rockies' rocky road ends here

By Joe Kay
AP Sports Writer

Jose Ortiz went 5-for-6. Larry Walker hit a three-run homer. The Colorado Rockies tied their franchise record for scoring on the road. How did a struggling team manage to pull that one off?

        Simple: It came to Cincinnati.

Shortstop Juan Castro threw two balls into the Reds' dugout during Colorado's six-run sixth inning, helping the Rockies romp 16-7 Friday night.

Colorado matched its high for runs in a road game — they also scored 16 in Atlanta on Aug. 12, 1995. The 16 runs were a season high, coming one night after a 14-5 win in Chicago.

“We come up with one of those every once in a while,” manager Buddy Bell said.

The Rockies swept a three-game series here June 15-17 and left town thinking they had finally gotten out of their road rut. They were wrong — they have yet to win another series on the road.

Shawn Chacon lasted four-plus innings, his second-shortest stint in 19 starts.

Dan Miceli (1-5) finished the fifth inning, leaving him in line for the win when the Reds' defense let them down.

Rockies Notes: The Rockies haven't won more than two in a row since their

three-game sweep at Cinergy last June, going 12-35. ... 3B Jeff Cirillo, who left Thursday's game with a sore lower back, was out of the lineup. Norton started at third. ... Mike Hampton pinch hit and drew a walk in the eighth. Hampton hit his seventh homer on Thursday, tying the NL record for homers by a pitcher ... Chacon hit C Jason LaRue in each of his first two at-bats, grazing his chest and throwing one that glanced off his neck.
