Chronology of Rose case




        1989

        Feb. 20 — Rose and two of his lawyers meet in New York with commissioner Peter Ueberroth, NL president A. Bartlett Giamatti and others.

        March 20 — Commissioner's office releases a statement saying it is investigating “serious allegations against Rose” and that Washington lawyer John Dowd is heading the inquiry.

        March 21 — Sports Illustrated releases a story containing allegations tying Rose to baseball betting.

        May 3 — Grand jury in Cincinnati begins hearing evidence concerning Rose's tax returns.

        May 9 — Giamatti receives 225-page report from Dowd, who hand-delivers it along with seven volumes of exhibits.

        May 19 — Rose's lawyers ask for 30-day postponement of hearing before Giamatti, citing need for additional preparation time.

        June 19 — Rose sues Giamatti in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, seeking to stop the hearing and prevent Giamatti from deciding the case. Suit reveals that a bookmaker has accused Rose of betting on Reds game.

        June 25 — Judge Norbert Nadel issues temporary restraining order against Giamatti.

        July 31 — In a setback to Rose, U.S. District Judge John D. Holschuh in Columbus decides the case belongs in federal court.

        Aug. 24 — Giamatti announces that Rose has agreed to accept a lifetime ban, but there is no formal finding that he bet on baseball. Rose may apply for reinstatement after one year.

        1990

        April 20 — Rose pleads pleads guilty in U.S. District Court to two felony counts of failing to report income from autograph appearances, baseball memorabilia sales and gambling.

        July 19 — U.S. District Judge S. Arthur Spiegel sentences Rose to five months in jail and three months in a halfway house. He also orders Rose to perform 1,000 hours of community service at local schools and a youth club when he's released from jail.

        Aug. 8 — Rose arrives at a federal work camp in Illinois to begin serving his five-month sentence.

        1991

        Jan. 7 — Rose leaves the work camp. He checks into a halfway house two days later.

        Feb. 3 — Rose becomes ineligible for baseball's Hall of Fame when its board of directors votes 12-0 to prohibit anyone who is on the permanently ineligible list from being voted in.

        April 5 — Rose's three-month stay at the halfway house is complete.

        July 23 — Rose leaves his hometown to start a new life in Boca Raton, Fla.

        1997

        Sept. 26 — Rose applies for reinstatement to baseball.
